Story
I am crowdfunding to help pay for dental work for my mum who has not been able to smile using her teeth for 26 years.
When my mum was a baby and her teeth first started coming through she suffered from a condition called Amelogenesis Imperfecta which meant her teeth had no enamel on them.
As she got older her teeth became more and more brittle but she battled on and looked after them as best as she could.
During her early twenties, before she had me, my mum was unfortunately in a violent relationship and just as she left him he knocked out all of her teeth on the top right after grabbing her face.
Following that she visited the dentist over ten times. The dentist, which has now closed down, took at least one tooth at every visit and she lost all but six of her teeth before she reached the age of 24.
Since she lost her teeth she has dedicated her life to bringing me up and making sure that I look after my teeth.
She is very nervous to go to the dentist in case that they take the last of her remaining teeth. My mum has not been able to smile “properly with her teeth” since she was 22.
I have never seen my mum smile with her teeth, or let herself go and laugh. Ive never seen my mum without her dentures in and I am 25-years-old now.
My mum even sleeps in them just in case she is called out in the middle of the night.
This year she took an enormous leap forward and got in touch with a dentist and told them what had happened.
She was quoted £15,000 just for implants on the top, which is just not viable and not the sort of disposable income that we have so she dismissed the idea, but I would love to be able to help my mum. I want her to be able to smile without being worried about her teeth showing and be able to enjoy life.
