    Story

    PROJECT SUMMARY

According to the World Economic Forum, the social and economic impact of technology is widespread and accelerating. The speed and volume of information have increased exponentially. Experts are predicting that 90% of the entire population will be connected to the internet within 10 years. With the internet of things, the digital and physical worlds will soon be merged. These changes herald exciting possibilities.

Unfortunately, 55 to 75% of parents in Sierra Leone, digitally, have little or no idea what digital inclusion is and the importance of empowering their girl child to be computer pros. Most of them find it as a waste of time, energy, and money and don't want their children to indulge in such. While in some homes, parents don't think girls can do better in learning digital skills, so they don't give their girl child the opportunity to try new skills. As an orgnaistion, we want to make parents believe that 'Yes Girls Can'. They can be pros in sound engineering, video editing, and other related skills. The history of Sierra Leone only recognized women to be in the kitchen, go to the farm, get marriage soon if formal education doesn't work for them. With this stereotypical behavior of parents and culture, today, many women and girls have less or no knowledge in some of these new normal skills, therefore, they remain unempowered and unemployed.

On the other hand, some of these aspiring young women and girls have the desire to learn new computer skills but the institutions providing these skills are way too expensive for them to enroll in since their parents cannot afford to pay.

    CHALLENGES

Women and girls are still more likely than men and boys to never have access to digital literacy. Though there has been some progress made over 2 years. A more focus on men and boys' digital education continues to dominate in countless spheres. For that reason, such a challenge has placed women and girls at a huge, disadvantage and the coronavirus is causing more difficulties. Women and girls are 5 to 6 times less likely to consider a career in tech than boys because they are not encouraged and there are no or fewer free-of-cost platforms and this is a sign of abject poverty if the need is not urgently addressed with all seriousness.

    SOLUTION

In order to close this gap and provide opportunities to these young girls, the CEO of Future Leaders Initiative SL thought it fit to share some basic typing and music production [audio engineering] skills with these young girls to become computer proficient. He has also contacted a few of his training center colleagues to support these girls acquire graphic design, camera operation, and video editing skills for free.

The next computer pros and audio engineers project is going to ensure that the beneficiaries receive the said skills and determination required for success. Sound engineering, graphic design, camera operation, and video editing are sustainable steps towards closing the digital gap and will certainly add to the progress of these young leaders.

This project will provide eight Dell Vostro 5468 (P75G), i5-7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Windows 10 Pro for basic typic skills, one MacBook pro for audio engineering, seven external hard drives to back up their files and launch for food within a period of one year.

    Cost of one dell laptop = £107.77 x 7 = £754.39

Cost of one MacBook pro= £320.00

    Cost of one external hard drive= £19.03. x 7 = £133.21

    Launch per year= £819

    LONG TERM IMPACT

This project will break the stereotypical cycle and will make women and girls in the future be financially empowered, find a better job to be economically stable, and support their respective families. It will not only unleash their skills but it be a one-step-closer journey to their career path and will holistically make them be fulfilled.

An empowered girl child is an empowered nation!

    Let's BREAK the BIAS together!
