Story

Highfield Cricket Club, located in my home town of Wigan, has played an important part in my families life for 50 years, so with one eye on the Clubs centenary next year 2024, I have decided to combine a fundraising activity with achieving the elusive “ton”. Despite playing for the club for around 45 years, claiming a reasonable number of wickets and catches and even biffing a few runs, I have never ever scored a hundred.

So for 25 days from November 1st, I plan to walk 100 miles, braving whatever weather is thrown at me. Its a decent personal target given that my average daily distance over the last 6 months (including summer golf) is 1.5 miles, so I am going to have to almost treble that and in more inclement weather too. 😟

And to make the link to the Highfield CC centenary even more appropriate, those 100 miles will include walks from the Highfield ground to clubs we played in that very first season 1924. That will include clubs in the Wigan/St Helens region like Rainford, St Helens Recs, Hindley St Peters, Golbourne, and the sites of now defunct clubs like Platt Bridge Wesleyan Methodists Cricket Club!!

And the challenge will be rounded off on Saturday 25th November with another hundred - 100 circuits of the Highfield Cricket Club ground, some 25 miles on that day alone. All are welcome to join me and maybe raise some money of their own, either for the Highfield Cricket Club Fund or another charity, I dont mind.

All moneys raised by my challenge will go directly to Highfield Cricket Clubs Centenary Fund which is to be used in further improving facilities. I know that money will be used wisely, as its a well established community focused club, providing facilities and engagement to over 6,000 people a year, many of them families. 🐿️🏏
