Story
Gita, Rich and Stu from Sheffield are planning to go to the Refugee Camp in Dunkirk, France to work alongside a team of volunteers at the Dunkirk Refugee Childrens Centre, which has a large play area in front of it. The Childrens Centre provides a soft play room for babies a nursery class and creative, art, film and sports sessions throughout the week. There are many children on site who need this space to play, share a smile, and receive support in a safe environment.
We've asked how we can assist the volunteers at the Dunkirk Refugee Childrens Centre, and one issue on site is the land of the main play areas. The land is hard clay and on top is large aggregate stones which the children throw at each other regularly when tensions rise, and the children trip up regularly receiving nasty injuries.
We want to help support the volunteers and children at the Dunkirk Refugee Camp to have a safe, colorful, exciting and relaxing playground they can rely on and enjoy everyday.
Our mission is to go to the site and make the existing swing and slide play area safer for the children to play around and jump off. Currently the wonderful slide and swings donated or made by volunteers is surrounded by stones and large puddles. We would like to develop these existing play areas further with better drainage and ground cover to reduce risk of injury. We would also like to create new inspiring and fun structures on the playground for the children to play with.
We also have a long term goal of creating a permanent 10m x 10m playground area where the children can play ball and run around. Currently the ground makes ball games near impossible.
We plan to use the funds raised to help towards our ferry crossing, accommodation and petrol costs which is £340.00 in total for 3 volunteers for a 6 day trip. We are also trying to raise funds for buying materials to develop existing and new play areas beside the Dunkirk Refugee Childrens Centre.
