Tyler’s Challenge!
Who is Tyler?
Tyler is 18 years old and has Charge Syndrome. For him this means that he is Autistic, Deaf, visually impaired, tube fed, globally delayed and a wheelchair user. He is also a super cheeky boy who loves clocks, cycling, swimming (or more accurately flopping about like a whale in the pool) and Mario Kart.
We use the Bristol Family Cycling centre in Hengrove, where Tyler has cycled since he was 8. It has a completely enclosed athletic track and a massive variety of different bikes and trikes for everyone's ability and stage. It is also where our youngest Max, learnt to cycle. It has been a constant in our life over the years and one of the rare activities that gives Tyler freedom to cycle alone (he uses one of their amazing trikes) and safely and he loves it!
Why are we fundraising?
While Tyler can walk and transfer, he struggles with any distance and relies on his chair for anything longer than pottering around the house or college. Tyler has a basic wheelchair funded by the NHS but it struggles with any terrain other than tarmac, it is also a manual chair which means that either I or Tyler's dad, Stuart need to push him, while this is no issue for us it doesn't allow Tyler any freedom and we would like for him to have a little independence in being able to move his chair where he wants to go instead of relying upon us and be able to explore new places and not be limited to paved areas.
We have found a new chair that we would like to get for Tyler but as Tyler can walk in his own home, we are not eligible for any NHS funding to purchase this, so we have been thinking of ways to raise this money ourselves and have come up with Tyler’s Challenge.
Tyler’s Challenge
Throughout 2025 Tyler will aim to complete 300 laps of the track (75 miles) on his trike at the Bristol family Cycling centre, and this is where you all come in! We are asking for your support to either donate to Tyler’s Challenge fund, or if you cannot donate, please do share with anyone that you think might be able to help. Stuart, Max and I will of course be cycling along with Tyler and cheering him on.
How to follow Tyler’s progress
