Story
Gemma’s Kabul to Scunthorpe
Whilst deployed to Afghanistan on Op Toral attached to 2 York’s, I have decided to raise money for Ward 18- Haematology and Oncology at Scunthorpe General Hospital. On the 18th of October my Nan got diagnosed with Myeloma, which is a form of blood Cancer. The cancer can be treated and quality of life can be maintained, however it is terminal. The time scale of how long someone has to live after being diagnosed with this type of cancer varies, it can be 1 year or 10 years.
The treatment my nan has had from all the staff on Ward 18 has been incredible. The dedication all members of staff have and the strength of my nan has inspired me to do this.
I want to be able to give something back to Ward 18 so to raise money for those patients under going treatment for cancer. Whilst deployed in Afghanistan for 6 months, I shall be cycling, running and rowing the distance from Kabul to Scunthorpe, which is 3,543 miles. This works out at completing a minimum of 19 miles a day.
Any amount of money donated would be greatly appreciated.
Cancer is horrific. It’s frightening. But maybe one day they’ll be a cure for all types of cancer and no one will have to suffer.
