Crowdfunding is the new way to raise money for a personal cause on JustGiving.
Butterfly Baby Baskets was initiated by Dr Genna Davis in July 2016.
The concept is simple. It is much safer for a baby to sleep separately from the mother rather than in the same bed. The risk is that when the mother falls asleep she may roll onto and harm the baby. It is unfortunately a common cause of infant death throughout the World, but even more so in Malawi.
The main purpose of the baby baskets is to act as a bed for the baby. They have a mattress in the base, a blanket and a mosquito net to fit over the top, helping to protect the baby from malaria.
Within the baskets will be all sorts of things needed for a mother to look after a newborn. Such as clothes, re-usable nappies, soap, baby bath etc.
The baskets will be woven by a local support group of HIV positive women and men. They will be paid for their work, meaning they will have a long-term sustainable income. The group are currently in the learning stages of how to weave - this teaching is all being covered by Butterfly Baby Baskets.
The project will happen in partnership with Butterfly Space, a long-running a very successful volunteer and community project in Nkhata Bay.
We hope to give every one of the poorest new mothers in Nkhata Bay District, Malawi, a baby basket.
The cost per basket is around £6 (£4 for the contents and £2 for the basket).
Any questions please ask and we would be VERY grateful for any donation!

I stayed a couple of times at the Butterfly Lodge many years ago. Staff were great, and I have some very fond memories of the place. Good to see this initiative.
About the fundraiser
Nkhata Bay, Northern Region, Malawi
As a medical student I chose to do my elective in Nkhata Bay Malawi. Whilst there I noticed a number of areas of need within the community. Infant death rates (children aged less than 1) are 44 in 1000. Hence why I returned once qualified to set up this charitable project.
