The Monoloco is thought to be the world's only steam-powered monorail locomotive. This unique piece of railway history has already undergone a major restoration, but an unexpected axle failure has left it in need of further specialist engineering work before it can steam again.

At the May steaming, Monoloco suffered an axle failure caused by the rear wheel moving out of alignment. This resulted in both connecting rods bending and cracking, bringing the locomotive's operation to an immediate halt.

Unfortunately, the chassis and running gear were not included in the original restoration carried out at the Rudyard Lake Railway workshop. We now need to raise funds to repair and strengthen these vital components and get this remarkable locomotive back on the rails.

The good news is that work is already underway. New connecting rods have been CAD designed and laser cut in Telford, and they will shortly go for machining to accept the bearings.

We've also taken the opportunity to improve the design. The original rods were relatively thin around the bearing areas, which is where they bent. The new rods will have an increased specification around these critical areas, making them stronger and more robust for the future.

The rear axle will be constructed from two car half-shafts, which will be modified to fit Monoloco's cranks.

Once the work is complete, Rudyard Lake Railway will assist with balancing the final assembly, helping to ensure the repaired running gear is properly prepared for Monoloco's return to steam.

This isn't simply a repair to an old locomotive. Monoloco is a remarkably rare survivor and is thought to be the only steam-powered monorail locomotive of its kind anywhere in the world.
