Gig Buddies was created by the punk band Heavy Load. Three members of Heavy Load have learning disabilities and they became increasingly frustrated when their fans had to leave their gigs at 9pm due to support staff working inflexible hours. Gig Buddies was created to allow people with learning disabilities to do what they love and enjoy night life just like everyone else; the organisation matches an individual with learning disabilities to a volunteer with similar music taste so they can go to gigs together. Gig Buddies supports people to be less socially isolated and lead healthier and more fulfilled lives that they’re in control of. Manchester has a vibrant gig culture, so we need a Gig Buddies to help support people with learning disabilities to get involved in our fantastic community of music lovers!
