Story

Since growing up with no money for school fees and walking 3 hours across Kampala to got to school everyday, Gilbert "Scooter" Okot has been a passionate and dedicated community leader; working with children from the slums across Kampala to teach them beatboxing and break-dancing.

After 8 years of working with the most vulnerable children in Kampala and building a pan-African network of beatboxers, dancers and cultural artists (including organising the Afrika Beatbox Battle ) Scooter has been invited to host a workshop at one of Africa's biggest beatboxing events - Beatbox Culture in South Africa! He just needs a plane ticket!

This is an incredible opportunity, not just for Scooter, but for the community he has built in Kampala and across West Africa. Attending this event will give an international voice to the children of Kampala's slums, whose talent is being overlooked due to their abject poverty. He will teach in schools that serve some of Cape Town's biggest slums and in doing so will be able to build relationships between the two communities - showing the children that music and art can be a route out of poverty.

£500 is such a small amount of money for many of us, but it's unobtainable for Scooter. He is a selflessly dedicated and passionate teacher, bringing music and dance to children with no other form of expression. He deserves this chance as much as anyone.
