    Story

My mum adopted a rescue dog called Jessie in 2014. She had an obvious history of abuse but when given love and care, showed herself to be a friendly, loving, happy dog. She is a Springer lab cross, has lots of energy and is an amazing companion to my mum.

In March, Jessie and my mum were attacked by a fighting dog. Whist trying to rescue Jessie, mum was bitten in her face and had to have stitches. The police were involved and this left both Jessie and my mum traumatised.

While recovering from this, Jessie broke her leg on her daily run. Jessie had a complex fracture on her elbow, which required surgery to save her leg. This seems to be a common injury in spaniels because their bone density can be less in that breed. Amputation was offered by insurance as a solution but because she would have only one weight bearing front leg, this could cause the same problem in the future to her other front leg. The operation on her leg involved inserting a plate & screws.

Recovery has been very slow due to part of her cartilage not healing correctly. For this to heal, her recovery plan had to start from the beginning again. A course of hydrotherapy was recommended. She has now had 7 hydrotherapy sessions and the difference it has made is amazing. She is now up to two 15 minute walks every day. This can slowly be increased until the cartilage has healed correctly. Her vet and hydro-therapist are very pleased with her progress and she loves being in the water. The reason this is working so well is because Jess is able to build up her movement without her leg having to take her weight, as the buoyancy of the water holds her body.

She will need at least 10 more sessions before we can think about ‘normal’ walks or the start of any strenuous activity. This is where I come in!

I would like to raise as much money as I can towards the costs of getting Jessie well again. My mum is a pensioner & is struggling with vet’s bills & hydrotherapy sessions which are £40 a pop.

I am planning to cycle from Bristol to Lyme Regis and back (144 miles in total) in one day, to raise money for Jessie’s treatment. Please will you help me to achieve this?

Jessie is a part of our family and is a happy fun loving dog and I want to help her as much as I can, to get back to being the carefree smiling dog that she is. Please think about sponsoring me to do this, so I can raise as much as I can towards her recovery.
