Story

Each year we host 2 boys from Belarus through the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line. Belarus received over 70% of the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear explosion in April 1986 and as a result, thousands are born every year who go on to develop thyroid cancer, bone cancer and leukaemia. The children visit the UK for 4 weeks of rest and recuperation. Doctors in Belarus say that this boosts the children’s immune systems for at least two years, helping them to resist, or recover from, serious illness. In the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it is important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. It can also significantly reduce the amount of radioactive caesium which has built up in a child’s body. It costs £600 to bring over one child each year and I would really like to be able to raise enough money to cover the cost of bringing over the 2 boys we will host. Thank you for reading
