Story

Scrubs for Cambridgeshire / Helping the NHS was created with the intention to work together as community to help the NHS.

I noticed that many local hospitals, surgeries, care homes, hospices required support during the COVID-19 pandemic so I asked my friends working for the NHS if their hospitals need scrubs or any other item which involves fabrics.

Initially I offered my help with 10 scrubs, however, there was a high demand for these items, and I asked my dear adult students from my sewing club for help and they were incredibly happy to join me. I am thankful for it!

Unfortunately, our labour was not enough to make the 150 scrubs in short notice so I decided to ask around for more help and open this Facebook group with the idea of expanding our network and be able to make more scrubs more efficiently and in less time and include all those wonderful skillful people in the Cambridgeshire area.

The respond was amazing now we have more than 500 member and nearly 300 machinists working with their soul for the cause.

Our goal is to help as many NHS Hospital, centres, and care home in Cambridgeshire.

At the beginning we were focus in Hinchingbrooke hospital then we started helping others hospital, surgeries, hospices, care homes, etc. Now that we have enough skillful hands willing to help in Cambridgeshire area, we are staring working per small areas or villages. We are trying to help as much as we can.

We are definetly working together for the same cause, each day we have more amazing people join us. We are very thankful for it.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

1.- Supplying material: Fabric to make Scrub uniform. Preferable colour dark blue, 100% cotton or poly-cotton 50/50 or 35/65 Suitable to wash several times up to 60 degrees. Pediatric department will welcome other colours.

2.- Giving your sewing skills + Fabircs; You can make as much as you can or just one scrubs will be very welcome. We'll supply material to you as soon as we have available.

3.- Spreading the word, sharing this just giving page to anyone you think can help. Also sharing our Facebook page Scrubs for Cambridgeshire

We have raised £2,203 in our Facebook Fundraiser and we are very thankful for it. Thank you to you very kind donations! Initially we asked for £1000 but in only a day we reached our first goal, we edit our goal again to £10,000.

We have bought close to 2,000 m of fabric to supply our amazing community of sewist and have worked really hard. Please keep in mine that 200 m = 57 scrubs only. Fabric prices can vary from £3 to £3.7 per meter.

We have also received a significant amount of donation of fabric as well. We have used these to make scrubs, surgery hats, masks & wash bags for scrubs.

We have already made close 3,500 scrubs and 4,000 fabric items up to September 2020.

We continue to recieve request for help from different part of Cambridgeshire from Surgeties, Care Homes and Hospital, there still a requirement and we will still support as long as we have fabric and volunteers available.

Thank you very much for your great help in this difficult time.

We are all in this!

Why I'm raising money? The NHS workers are in real need of scrubs uniforms at the moment. Now It is a mandatory to wear scrubs uniform in all Medical clinics and don’t have any at the moment and hospitals are short with the requirements.

How donations will be used? You donation will go directly to help the NHS, we are going to buy supplies to make the scrubs uniforms.

Any donation will be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU!

A little Introduction:

My name is Gioconda Gomez (Gio), I'm an experienced Fashion Designer (specialist in Bridals and Evening gowns). Before all this happened I used to run Art & Sewing Clubs for kids & adults in Cambridge. Holiday Kids Clubs too!

I recently started working with clothing/costumers again but suddenly all this COVID-19 happened and I had to stop working. I was frustrated as many others.

We still have a good health and good spirit, this is what is really important right now. I decided to be positive, try to not complain, and help in whatever I can.

We are all in this!

Thank you very much!
