Story

Born with no legs and arms ending at the elbow Peter Hull was encouraged by physio’s to be active with the aim of providing him with a strong upper body and a strong set of heart and lungs. Peter took up swimming and with his determination and strength ended up representing his country at the 88 and 92 Paralympics winning three golds at Barcelona. What an achievement! He was rewarded in 1991 with an MBE for services to disability sport.

Since retiring from the top level of the sport he has spent over 25 years supporting the development of disability and adapted sport in both a professional and voluntary capacity. I have known Pete for nearly 20 years as my wife has been his administrative assistant for most of that time. He has never sought special treatment and never complains about his situation. In his own words he is a “fiercely an independent person”. He lives on his own and drives an adapted vehicle. He has been and will continue to be such an inspiration to so many people but only if he can maintain his independence.

Years of reliance on his shortened arms and shoulders has taken its toll. Pete now has severe osteoarthritis in his shoulders and is now reliant on a power chair to get around. However, he actually needs a specially adapted power chair that he can get in and out of himself and that can be secured in his adapted vehicle. This chair will cost in excess £13000. The local authority has ring-fenced £5000. Pete does not have the funds to pay the rest.

Personally, I don’t believe someone like Pete should have to use his modest savings towards this. I would like to believe there are enough people out there willing to contribute towards securing a power chair so that Pete can keep leading an independent life and continue to work and inspire more and more people to achieve more in their lives no matter what in life is thrown at them. Any amount contributes to helping Pete power back into action. Thank you in anticipation of your support.
