Story
The Glenkens Men's Shed is based in the dilapidated, run down, former Smiddy in Balmaclellan. The building is cold, damp, drafty, lacking in basic facilities and the roof leaks! The "shedders" have built an inside loo, but there is no hot water, no heating, poor lighting and only basic electricity provision. The elderly shedders are going to cycle the 30 miles around Loch Ken in order to raise funds for the shed, which is entirely self-funded.
The aim is to build a mezzanine floor to provide more work space, install a water heater, replace some rotten windows, install 3-phase electrics to power our metalwork lathe and divide up the large, cold open shed into easier to heat work spaces. Thus improving our green footprint, reducing heating bills, saving energy and improving working conditions.
Despite the poor conditions the "shed" is thriving and provides a valuable resource, not only for the members who attend it, but also the wider Glenkens community. Men’s Sheds are designed to combat loneliness and isolation in the elderly male population, helping to improve wellbeing and maintain social contact.
Many shed members are very grateful to the shed for providing an introduction to the local community; meeting new friends, learning new skills and helping to develop socially in the post-work environment. The shed is dear to me for helping me find a sense of purpose when my working life ended; stopping a downward spiral of drink, depression and isolation.
We plan to spend the funds on materials to build a DIY new window, board out the open spaces and employ local tradesmen to install 3 phase power and most importantly construct the mezzanine floor. Any donations, great or small will help and be very gratefully received, and help achieve our goal of a warm, dry safe shed.
