Story
Being a carer for severely disabled children can be a very lonely place, you can feel isolated when in a group of able bodied people, and with healthy children running about it can also be very emotional. You can even feel the centre of unwanted attention, simply having something to eat in public with your child.
Glenlaw parent/carer support group organises events for parents/carers of severely disabled children to give them what they feel is a safe space with others in the same position as themselves, giving them company and a listening ear.
We organise events such as music therapy, wheelchair dancing, animal therapy and many others. We also have a weekly walking wheelchair group that allow our parents/carers and their family to take some nice easy exercise with other parents/carers and their families. We all go for a snack and juice and most importantly a chat after each walk.
As everyone may know, activities for children with severe disabilities are not cheap and to include able bodied siblings increases the cost further. We also give advice and support to our parents/carers and assist them in obtaining services and equipment they require to care for their child.
I hope that you can help us provide the support our parents/carers so desperately need. Please give as generously as you can. Thank you.
