UPDATE: I've raised ~£2.5k elsewhere. Only £1500 to go!!
Support me and my colleagues as we trek through the Himalayas to raise money for education in Nepal as part of Computershare's charitable programme.
The Cause
Funds raised through the Computershare Nepal Trek will go towards the construction of a hostel allowing year 11 and 12 students to live on campus and attend the World Youth International School. The hostel will provide schooling for students who didn't previously have access due to distance and allow students to maximise their education.
Why a hostel?
The education system in Nepal is different to most other countries. Most parents believe that for their child to achieve the best education possible, they need to board at a school. For this reason, parents often will not send their children to study year 11 and 12 at a school that does not have a hostel.
World Youth International
World Youth International (WYI) was founded in 1988 by the late Robert Hoey, and has since provided access to basic services such as healthcare and education for more than 15,000 people.
WYI is committed to creating innovative and exciting opportunities for people to live life passionately and contribute to the global community, and enhancing quality of life, strengthening communities and reducing poverty through sustainable development projects.
The World Youth International School was constructed in 1998 with the purpose to train local teachers and provide a rich, dynamic education for the children. Situated in the Gokarna region, the school provides children with an international education through shared cultural teachings and experiences.
The school currently caters for students up to year 10 and has 505 students, 30 of which live at the Sapana Dreaming Home. With support from Computershare, the school will be extended to include schooling for year 11 and 12 students.
