Story

Globe RC is almost 100 years of members, races and building a community to change lives and develop skills. Help us fund the boat fund. Globe supports developing skills in sports of all members at every level of technique and confidence.

Take part in The Virtual Globe Boat Race - each £1 donated gets the name 1 metre further in the boat race. When you donate add the name you wish to win in the comments for your vote to apply.

Competitors:

The Gherkin GLB073 (Team Duffy)

Purely personal. It's a nickname from those uni rowing days that continues today. Our Irish fitness machine, Ross Duffy is still affectionately known as The Gherkin back on the emerald isle (a poetic name for Ireland).

Globe 100 GLB073 (Team Hill)

As we approach Globe Rowing Club’s centenary in 2023, it would be great to see a boat on the river at Greenwich, on the Royal Docks and competing at top regattas to mark this moment in time. It feels appropriate to name this boat in the run up to our 100th, as we are using the name to raise funds for the Club’s centenary and for our success in the next 100 years.

Nipper Hook GLB073 (Team Wylie)

Globe as it is today would probably never have existed without the tireless work done by Nipper from the late fifties until his sad passing. We have had in the past a number of boats, RJ Hook, Nipper, Iris, to name but three. To most of the members now he is just a photograph on the club wall and few remember what Nipper did. I would dearly love to locate the written letter Nipper received from the Duke of Edinburgh in the sixties following Nipper contacting him when the barge/boathouse was vandalised and all the boats smashed. Hopefully Nipper will be remembered again in the club he built.

Zoom GLB073 (Team Rigger Jiggers)

This boat was purchased during the Covid-19 pandemic as club members came together virtually on numerous Zoom video calls for training and socials. And we have no doubt this boat will also zoom across the finish line with our racing crews! It will be a reminder in our boat house of the supportive Globe community who are going from strength to strength as a club. Go Globe!

How does the race work?

It is a four week race with each £1 donated is 1 metre in the race. We will be counting donations weekly up to £250 per individual donor. Any additional funds above £250 donated from an individual in 1 week will not move the boat further along the course. This is to allow for friendly competition. We will release the race update once a week here, via email and Instagram.
