Story
Education, running water and electricity are all things that we, here in the UK, take for granted. However, there are people who are brought into this world without these privileges. Did you know that, in 2015, less than 38% of females in Sierra Leone over the age of 15 could read and write?
When children are born they should have equal opportunities to succeed and if these children are not taught to read and write then their career prospects and chances of achieving their aims will be fatally hindered.
This is why I believe that illiteracy is a fundamental issue and one of the core problems which causes the global problem of poverty. By tackling illiteracy and a lack of education in third world countries, we are essentially putting long term provision in place for future generations to be able to decrease levels of poverty.
My trip to Sierra Leone will enable me to experience first hand the effects this provision can have on communities of people less fortunate than us. I also believe I, as an individual, as well as my group will be able to have a long lasting and beneficial effect on the children and families we come into contact with through our aid and energy in the community.
