Story

HOW IT STARTED:

Running drama workshops on the Isle of Wight, I was stunned that the leaving students had so little awareness of the professionalism they need, in the industry they want to enter. Then, whilst auditioning re-engaging participants for a production I was directing – it struck me that I could help both groups develop the skills and disciplines they needed. So Advanced Start was born.

AN AGENT for CHANGE

The Isle of Wight is a "Culturally Deprived Area" and Arts Council England [ACE] has assigned it Priority Place status; recognising the need for increased cultural investment here - Theatre Reviva! is rising to that challenge with Advanced Start: a solution to the social challenges of employment in the cultural sector on the Isle of Wight. It upsets me that the people I was working with, can't get employment. I want to change that -

Theatre Reviva! is a Community Interest Company [CIC] and its initiative, Advanced Start, runs post-school/college and adult vocational, cultural, and paid work programmes for those Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) and also for people re-engaging with the Performing Arts.

The programmes are approximately 12 weeks long, and include performing arts productions, advanced training sessions, workshops, improvisation work, text work (Shakespeare and new writing) and paid professional roles. The vital topics are communication skills, technical and stage management skills and advanced acting skills; (at the professional levels that participants really need).

Distinctively, Advanced Start delivers these with a Mentoring approach, where older professionals are linked to younger participants, as both groups travel through the development experience; with the chance to work in a paid position at the end of the course. This is the next production participants have the opportunity to join .... in Newport on the Isle of Wight this summer!

HOW YOUR DONATION HELPS

You'll help change disadvantaged lives. All your donations go into an Advanced Start course account, to support the teaching and training of each cohort, enabling our participants to develop their self-confidence, self-esteem, technical skills, performing creativity, expression and resilience; to meet staff fees, rehearsal expenses and to integrate the appropriate participants into a professional production, as employees. This summer the end production is about Arnold Ridley - Private Godfrey in BBC TV's "Dad's Army", with public performances in early August 2024. Box Office open now!

ACTION PLAN
