In May this year, me and my husband volunteered in a lovely school in Patan, Nepal. One day we gave children an essay to write and the topic was ' What would you do if you won 1 million rupees?', and this sad boy showed me that his plan would be to help his dad who is seriously ill.
A few weeks later we visited the family in their home to see how we can help and what support does the dad need. We learned that he was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS), which is a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. He was completely paralyzed in the hospital for 2 years and now he is back home still bed-bound. The family has since suffered a severe hardship: dad had to leave his business and his wife had to sell shop that was their last income.As a result, they had to leave their house and move into a rented room with two children. Mum is providing 24/7 care for her husband who still is unable to walk and live independently. At the moment, the older daughter who is a student works in the supermarket and her earnings cover rent, but the family is struggling to provide food. We are asking you to help this family, even with as little as £5 as this family often have no money for basics as food or gas to cook food. We saw it with our own eyes and we can provide photos capturing the poverty the family is facing right now. The school is trying to reach out and supports them in any way they can. Typical Nepali family lives very humble lifestyle eating only dal bhaat which is rice and lentil soup. The doctors advised, in order for the dad to recover quicker, he needs to exercise and have a good nutritional diet with enough proteins and daily fruit intake.
The dad exercises and hopes one day he can return to work. Help us to help the family stand back on their feet.
