Story

Hi, I'm Hannah. I'm 33, I'm an actor and singer from London, and on the 5th May 2022 I had a seizure alone in my flat. At first I thought I was having a stroke, but it actually turned out to be a seizure caused by a brain tumour on my frontal lobe. After having many tests, we then found out I also had a mass on my lung. They both turned out to be cancerous and it's been one hell of a wild journey since then!

A month ago I had brain surgery to remove the tumour hanging out in my head. And soon I'll begin radiotherapy on the tumour site just to make sure it's all gone. Then I'll start chemotherapy and immunotherapy, which will be for a fair few months. This will then be followed by surgery to remove the remaining cancer in my lung. This will be a big op, and will take some time to recover from.

*Side note: All of this treatment is being complicated by the fact that I already have a heart condition caused by Kawasaki disease as a child which led me to have a heart bypass aged 4 at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool. I then had an out of hospital cardiac arrest in 2005, aged 16, and ended up in St George's Hospital in Tooting, London. I then developed further complications in intensive care caused by something called ARDS, which led to extensive damage to both my lungs- and I still have scar tissue on them from that time. Then five years ago I had a re-do bypass again at St George's, under the cardiac team there whose care I'm still under, and they are overseeing my cancer treatment today.

Now, to make matters even more complicated, the flat I've lived in alone for the last five and a half years is being demolished, and I am soon to be evicted. I will be made homeless slap bang in the middle of me having chemo (you literally couldn't write this...) and all the other treatment and surgery being thrown at me. I haven't worked since the day I had my seizure, and I'm not able to work anytime soon, which puts me in a tricky position.

My current situation dictates that unfortunately I'm going to have to pack up my flat and put my stuff in storage for a while, as I don't have anywhere suitable to move to at the moment. I'm seeking help from Camden council, and some housing charities, but their help is limited and not guaranteed. As I am currently not able to work, I'm receiving benefits and getting some help from a theatrical charity, but other than that my earning potential is zero at the moment, and I don't have any savings.

So, I'm asking for your help. Not something that comes naturally to me normally, but at this present point in time I'm struggling. I've had a lot thrown at me recently, and money is just something I don't have a lot of.

So where will the money go? This move is going to cost a lot more than normal - it's looking like at least £1500 - as it will be happening during my treatment and I physically wont be able to do anything. The cost of storage in London is expensive, it's going to cost me about £200 a month to store my belongings. I have a few sofas I can sleep on, but that's not really ideal while having treatment, so I may need to pay for an occasional B&B. Also things like food might end up being more expensive if I don't have access to a kitchen, or a stable home.

So if you can help in any way at all, no matter how small, I would be eternally grateful, and you will be helping me a great deal.

Hannah x

In terms of my ongoing cancer treatment, first week of January 2023 I had a lobectomy. They removed my lower left lobe from my left lung (and the cancer!) so it was a very big op and I've spent the last few months recovering. But I'm pleased to say the op went well and they think they got all the cancer. Here's what I look like from the insides now. Weird little innards, but I'm really proud of my body and what its battled.

After 2 months of living in emergency accommodation I eventually got the keys to my council flat. It really felt like it would never happen, but after persevering it finally did so I now have a secure home and a safe space to recover and fight this cancer.

So it's been a while since I've updated you all on everything. Your support and generosity have helped me immensely over the last few months and I can't thank you all enough. So I moved out of my old flat on 26th September, right in the middle of chemo which was very challenging as my chemo symptoms were very intense. My stuff went into storage which was VERY expensive but necessary and I was in a hotel for 2 months in the end. I couldn't access a kitchen so your help enabled me to eat food and stay as healthy as possible. So thank you :)
