Story
Fisherman’s Rest is a charity based in Malawi and has been there for the past 25 years. They have strong connections with the local communities and carry out projects that aim to support people out of poverty, through increasing standards of education and developing business in the area.
I will volunteer my time for a minimum of four months, working within the community and helping with their projects.
Here are some of the amazing projects they run:
The Water project - which provides safe and clean drinking water in rural areas. They also train local communities to maintain and fix their water pumps, providing the skills required, handing back ownership and responsibility to those who use it.
The School project - They work with over twenty four schools, across our two local districts. Many have poor facilities and buildings, that aren't safe or not conducive learning environments. They building new classroom blocks which are light, bright, colourful and safe.
The Tree project - At the current rate of deforestation, there won't be any trees left in Malawi by 2079. They work with local government and traditional authorities to protect existing woodland and establish new tree planting locations. Training is then provided as to how to plant trees, which species are suitable and how to nurture them.
The BRAVE project - By breaking the silence around menstruation and teaching the biology of puberty they are shifting attitudes and perceptions of what we are capable of. Often girls are marginalised and discriminated against, one of the main reasons for this is poor understanding of menstruation and adolescent puberty. As a result, girls drop out of school when their periods start. They want to put a stop to this problem and see that every girl has an equal opportunity to succeed.
The Tilitonse project - Tilitonse means, "we are together" and it's the name of their Community Centre. Tilitonse provides porridge, games, football matches, netball matches, adult learning, library books and a pop up cinema!
