Story
Can you imagine suffering from domestic violence without any legal services to turn to? Or fighting for the custody of your child with no lawyer by your side?
This summer (29th July-5th August) I will be undertaking a project as part of a Global Brigades Human Rights Brigade to help use the skills I am gaining in studying my law degree at the University of Birmingham. I'm travelling to Panama to help provide pro-bono legal consulting and legal rights resources to community members in rural communities. This means providing legal help to some of the poorest people of the world and ensure they are aware of, and utilise, their human rights.
I will assist Panamanian lawyers in resolving family law cases, and provide workshops on human rights topics to empower communities.
Common legal cases these communities struggle with include child custody, alimony, divorce, domestic violence, and criminal cases- which can all be distressing enough, let alone without access to legal help.
However, as a student on a tight budget, I desperately need any help I can to get me to Panama! I have been working hard at Waitrose in my holidays and will be fundraising at uni to cover costs of accommodation and food whilst I'm there, but I would be very grateful for any donation, big or small, that can help cover my flights, vaccinations etc. which will in turn allow me to use my skills to help people in need!
Thank you so much for even reading to this point - myself and the communities that I can't wait to make a difference in will deeply appreciate anything you can spare
