MY STORY

I am Harvey Greenaway, 17 and football mad

Sadly I was involved in a serious car accident on May 12th 2018 which left me in a coma with life threatening injuries. I was airlifted to the JR hospital, Oxford where I underwent emergency surgery to remove a large part of my skull to reduce the swelling on my brain.

I remained in intensive care on a life support machine for nearly a month . My family were told due to the nature of my brain injury ( DAI ), I would likely never walk or play football again and face a very unclear future. I finally came out of the coma and then spent a further two months in the neurosciences ward where i had to learn to swallow, eat without a tube and eventually say a few words.

I left the JR hospital on the 8th August and went to the OCE (Oxford Centre of enablement ) which is a Neuro Rehabilitation centre. Whilst at the OCE I have had had extensive Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Psychology. When I arrived I couldn't walk and could barely talk. At the time of writing this I am able to walk, run, talk and even play football. It truly is a miracle and whilst I still have a way to go I am looking forward to an amazing future.

During my time in hospital the love, prayers and support for me from my family, friends and even celebrities has been amazing. It has been a major contributor to my miracle recovery. I had a visit from Frank Bruno, Jordan Obita and a personal video and signed boots from my favourite Chelsea player Cesc Fabregas.

On November 25th I had my operation to re-construct my skull which has been very successful and has made me feel and look like the old harvey again.

I am scheduled to be discharged from the OCE on 19 December 2018 and allowed home for good. I will have been in hospital for over seven months at that point.

During the seven months I have always had a POSITIVE ATTITUDE and been DETERMINED to play football again and return home. This along with all of the support from my family and friends has led to what the medical team at the JR describe as a MIRACLE.

VIDEO OF MY JOURNEY & Denali Resilience Award

The video was produced and put together by Denali Advanced Integration for their conference that took place in Seattle USA on 7th December 2018. The CEO of Denali created the Annual Denali Resilience Award for which he chose me as the first recipient

Denali CEO, Majdi Daher, arrived in London on Monday 10th December and hand delivered the Denali Resilience Award to me at the OCE in oxford.

WHAT AM I RAISING MONEY FOR ?

Throughout my journey I have been kept alive and helped to recover by the most amazing dedicated medical and therapy team at both the JR and OCE. From the surgeons to the doctors to the nurses and all the therapists I cannot thank you enough.

Its my turn to give back and show my thanks for everything you have done for me. I am raising money which will be split evenly between the OCE and the JR Neurosciences ward to buy something special that the NHS cannot fund. This will make a big difference to the patients who benefit from these amazing places and the staff that work there. I am using crowd funding as I don't simply want to give the money to the hospital charities I want to buy both of them something amazing, something that they will always remember Harvey Greenaway by.

YOU SAVED MY LIFE AND GOT ME WELL AGAIN, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU ALL.
