Story

Harwich Time and Tide Bell

We are a group of local Harwich residents, supported by the Harwich Town Residents’ Association who are raising funds to install a Time and Tide bell near the Low Lighthouse in Harwich.

Please can you help us reach our target of £5,000?

This project has been in preparation for some time and has involved widespread consultation and engagement from various individuals and organisations within Harwich, including Harwich Town Council and Tendring District Council. We have planning permission from the local council and are working towards an MMO marine license.

The 668 kg bell has been specially designed for the purpose and will be donated to Harwich by a national charity, the Time and Tide Bell Organisation, itself funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. More information about the organisation and the bells already installed around the country can be found on their website: Time and Tide Bell

Once installed the bell would be a focus for community activity and for education. For example, pupils from local schools, and around the country where the bells are situated, will be recording and monitoring coastal erosion and sea levels over time and reporting on changes.

By the time of installation this artwork approximately 2 square meters, will have cost close to £40,000, contributed primarily from the National Lottery Community Fund, and from local sources.

We now need to raise approximately £5,000 towards the cradle that the bell will sit in.

Any donation, of any amount, will be gratefully received.

If we do exceed the amount required, any funds left over will be given to local charities.
