I am organising and fundraising to embark on a 5 week expedition to Nicaragua in Central America with the aim of implementing a WASH (Water, Sanitation and hygiene ) programme as part of a charity.

Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, only 63% of people have access to clean drinking water and 34% to clean sanitation. Along with this, it is ranked 3rd for vulnerability as a result of climate change. The rural communities often don't have access to a long term sustainable drinking source or access to clean sanitation conditions like we do here in the UK. They require engineering techniques to help provide them with more sustainable sources of water, and education on how to best use this water, be healthy and hygienic, all required to enable the highest possible living standards.

I aim to provide a multitude of things from education about water hygiene, constructing gravity fed water systems, working with communities to manage and govern there water usage, help entrepreneurs set up business's and teach children about sanitation to provide a better quality of life.

I'm a big believer in charities and after never doing anything like this before I believe that actually experiencing projects such as this WASH programme I hope it will, make me more open minded as to what charities actually do for communities around the world, and perhaps the realisation that time is probably the most important gift you can give to charity rather than money.

The money I raise will all go towards materials for building the gravity fed water systems, along with the rescores required to help educate the younger generation about water hygiene. along with this the funds will also go towards helping entrepreneurs In the rural communities set up small businesses to contribute to the local economy.
