Story

We contracted our builder to build us a new extension, fit a new kitchen and move the boiler, supply and install new front and back doors and double glazing throughout. We paid him in instalments for all parts and materials and everything seemed above board. He started on our extension and the bulk of it was built (doors and sky lantern are waiting to be fitted). We were happy with the work and the timeline it was being carried out in.

We then got married and went on honeymoon vacating the property for 11 days. Prior to going away we have a written agreement with him that we would have hot water on our return and the boiler would be moved, also he stated we would have a new fully fitted kitchen.

We returned from honeymoon on July 1st and the place was gutted, boiler disconnected so no hot water, no electric downstairs, no new windows and doors, rubbish piled up 5ft high in our back garden , no sign of a new kitchen, no progress on the extension – nothing.

We have since sought legal action to try and recoup the money stolen (£28k) but are unable to get anything back as the builder we hired does not own his property or any valuable assets.

Last week we had to tear down the extension he had partially built as he had not built safely or cleared it with building control as he said he had done, this was the bulk of the monies paid up front to him (£18k)

We are still living in this property in its current state but we do have hot running water (upstairs only) now at least though.

As you can imagine this entire situation has taken considerable toll on us both, my wife especially. This man has stolen what is supposed to be the happiest time in our lives, we will never get our honeymoon period back.

I originally posted my story on the HB on July 5th looking for some advice and a friendly ear and have had that in abundance from you all. I've had countless PM's offering to help and an army of you wanting to contribute to a crowd fund of sorts. After initially being against the idea of it I've come around to the idea that i shouldn't be turning down the offer of help in our time of need. A couple of people made the excellent point that this could help restore my wife's faith in people and go along way to making her feel better.

So with all that said, here we are.

I can't thank all of you enough.
