Many children in Uganda do not even finish primary education - even less finish secondary school. Many families struggle to fund their children through school as it is only free for the first four children and many families are larger than this. There is also a serious lack of classrooms and those that exist are sometime unusable due to lack of maintenance.

Where functioning classrooms do exist, class sizes are often in excess of 100 pupils to each teacher as there are nowhere near enough qualified teachers in the country, which affects the quality of the education that is available to these children.

Leeds RAG will be visiting Uganda in the summer of 2017 to help renovate currently-unusable classrooms and build new ones. They will be working with the charity Soft Power Education, who have an agreement with the Ugandan government that for every classroom they provide, the government will do its best to try and provide a teacher for it. This not only increases the number of children who can access and finish their education, but also improves the quality of that education by reducing class sizes.

I will be going to Uganda with the Leeds RAG group. As such I am aiming to raise money for Soft Power Education as they need it to buy the materials and pay local builders for their expertise so we can help with building projects. This means that not only are the children helped but also some local businesses.
