As the numbers of new COVID-19 cases are increasing in the West Bank while hospital vacancies are insufficient, locals from Aida Refugee Camp have taken matters into their own hands to support people in need of healthcare in Aida Refugee Camp, Bethlehem.

Aida camp was established in 1950 by the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees) for 1200 refugees. Nowadays the number of refugees has increased to more than 5,500 people in an area smaller than 0,071 km2. The camp is therefore particularly vulnerable to the coronavirus due to overcrowding. The residents of the camp are already suffering due to years of occupation, poor income and high unemployment rate. The COVID-19 crisis has made an already difficult situation even worse.

There are currently over 100 active COVID-19 cases in the camp and, due to the inadequate living conditions, the situation is critical. In addition, there are 280 residents in the camp with chronic diseases who run an even higher risk of complications.

Aida Camp residents have established a health committee in the camp, which consists of 2 doctors, 5 nurses and 1 social worker. The health committee follows up with infected families, provides them with support and oxygen concentrators if needed. The team is licensed by the local authority and will be supervised by the health ministry.
