I recently stumbled upon the appalling dog crisis in Romania. The public shelters are not rescue centres like we have in the UK, they are more like torture camps. Afraid to say that Romanian laws do not care for dogs whatsoever. Romania like many Eastern countries have a massive stray population. There is a terrific amount of cruelty given out to the defenceless dogs and even puppies. In fact when a pregnant bitch gives birth, the puppies are taken and put out onto the streets. The beautiful innocent dogs of the public shelters face a certain death, as the local mayor of one city orders them to be starved to death! This is just the tip of the iceberg. I realise we can't save all those precious souls, but we need to at the very least make a difference. We are looking to raise funds to pay for transport costs to bring the dogs to the UK and to other countries in Europe to live out the rest of their lives in warm, secure and loving forever homes. They need wind proof and waterproof sturdy wooden pods instead of the MDF pods they have now. Support for vet bills and passports is also needed. Ideally Romania need more privately run shelters, then these public shelters will be closed down.
