Story

On Thursday 20th of June 2024, I am climbing Ben Nevis with friends, and hope to raise some funds to put towards the repair of fire damage at Tanka Tanka Mental Health Hospital in Gambia.

Built in 2009 to replace Campama in Bajul. 150 beds, run by nurses (no doctors at all) and 1 x OT, with a £125 monthly budget, half of which is spent on food alone! Patients are detained under the "lunatic act"!!! The nurses have campaigned and produced a "mental health act" which remains gathering dust under the nose of the government. Losing their nurses to other countries, the pay here is around £275 a month after 5 years of study. Forensic patients mixed with perinatal patients. The stigma is very real here, with the big bosses scared to enter the unit! Female and Male wings with 6 to 10 old hospital beds per room. Stone rooms, and 1 Seclusion room, again stone and 1 mattress on the floor. My heart breaks💔💔💔

The government are yet to provide any funding to repair the fire damage, making the already terrible conditions much worse for the patients at the hospital.

Please Please Please, help us to support improving the conditions at the hospital.
