Story
Margery Kempe is King's Lynn's most famous daughter.
She was a medieval mystic and pilgrim who, although illiterate herself, dictated her spiritual experiences to a scribe who was probably a priest . She is considered to be the author of the first autobiography. She was born and lived in King's Lynn and worshipped at St Margaret's Church, now the Minster. There is no monument to her in the town and King's Lynn Civic Society believes it is time this is rectified. A public bench in front of the Town Hall was removed when the Saturday Market Place was resurfaced and the Town Hall floodlit. A bench in the same position is not possible but one on the area of York Stone would be possible. A bench featuring Margery Kempe 1373 - c1440 would be an excellent addition to the market square.
King's Lynn Civic Society put forward a design which has been agreed with the Borough Council and the concept is with the metal working company who will translate the artist's vision into a public bench. The Civic Society needs to raise the money for the production and fitting of the bench and the Borough Council has agreed to match fund the project.

A bench featuring Margery Kempe is a great idea - her autobiography says much about her native Lynn & she should be publicly celebrated there.
