Story

I want me and my daughters to live freely, not as the property of a man."

When Hawa, 31, arrived at work one morning to be told that a religious military group had taken over her country, it was her worst fear come true.

The new religious regime said that as a woman, Hawa was not allowed to work and had to stay at home. Even worse, she and her three young daughters were legally now seen as the possessions of her husband. As females, her daughters were not allowed to attend school.

Hawa's heart sank. Her abusive husband had previously become unemployed, and her own job had been the family's only source of income. The family sold all their possessions to survive. Her husband then threatened to sell their oldest daughter, 12, into child marriage for money - sadly a common practice in rural areas of their country.

Hawa protested and her husband violently attacked her and beat her unconscious. When she recovered, Hawa went to the local authority to report her attack and plead for assistance to protect her daughter. But the religious regime had taken over the entire police and legal system, and would not help her. Instead they told her that as she was a woman, she should go back and be with her husband and obey his wishes.

With no protection from the authorities, Hawa had no choice but to flee with her young children to prevent another violent attack, and the sale of her daughter. She found herself alone, without support, and with nowhere to go.

If Hawa and her children are discovered and sent back to her abusive husband, her daughters will be forcibly married and Hawa will be punished and even killed, as punishment for disobeying her husband and taking "his property."

Can you help this family escape this terrible fate? We're raising money to help Hawa and her young family live safely in hiding while they seek resettlement in a safe country. Her dream is to be resettled to a safe country where she and her daughters can live in freedom, and her daughters can receive schooling which their own country denies them for being girls.
