Story
I am King-lok Kenric WONG (黃敬洛), aged 21 and a student at Coventry University. I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I attended St. Stephen’s College Preparatory School and then progressed onto St. Stephen’s College. Upon graduation in 2014, I decided to pursue my studies in the United Kingdom. I did my undergraduate studies in Coventry University and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition with Second Upper Class Honours in Summer 2017. With a view to engaging in the field of dietetics in the future, I started the Bachelor degree in Dietetics and Human Nutrition in mid September this year, again in Coventry University, United Kingdom.
I had been healthy until a week ago when I felt severe pain in an arm and went to see the doctor, who suggested me to do tests on blood and bone marrow. Soon afterwards, I was diagnosed with “B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL)”, which is an acute form of cancer of the white blood cells, characterised by the overproduction and accumulation of cancerous, immature white blood cells. I was admitted to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire immediately and my studies is suspended.
Chemotherapy is the main form of treatment for ALL. A combination of drugs, including steroids, is usually given in several cycles with a rest period of a few weeks in between. Initially, the aim of treatment is to destroy leukaemic cells and induce remission. Once remission is achieved, further treatment is needed to destroy any residual disease and prevent leukaemia from coming back (relapsing) in the future. The treatment is generally 'risk-based'. Maintenance treatment to prevent disease recurrence usually involves lower chemotherapeutic drug doses, but may continue for up to three years, or longer, depending on the treatment protocol and my health progress.
Given that my family is in Hong Kong, I have already returned to Hong Kong for immediate treatment. The duration of the battle with ALL will be long.
I come from a grass-roots family and over the decades, my parents have worked hard to earn a living. My parents don’t have savings and are close to retirement. The prolonged medical treatment for ALL will undoubtedly cause them great financial implications/burden. With the expensive hospital fees and drugs, I am facing great financial difficulties.
I am reaching out to everyone for your help to fund my treatment privately and gain back my future. I really want to stand up to this horrible ALL and, upon full recovery, to pursue my studies as well as my dream of becoming a dietitian. I won’t give up.
Please kindly help me and donate to let me get through this.
Kind regards,
Kenric
