In August I am heading to Athens for a week with some friends I volunteer with at Crisis at Christmas, to provide help and support to refugees.

Doing this is especially resonant for me as my father arrived in the UK in 1939 as a refugee, and if it wasn't for the help, support and acceptance of this nation I wouldn't be here today.

About 300 of these refugees are currently squatting in a disused school. This is being managed by volunteers from all over the world, helping in all manner of ways from cooking, cleaning, teaching and playing games with the children, interpreting and finding out precise information.

I only rarely fundraise and I hope you could see your way to supporting me, so that we can buy essential items for them while we are out there, ranging from food, water, toiletries, nappies, toys, pens, classroom supplies, to necessities such as babies' buggies and ruck sacks for their belongings.

These human beings have nothing other than hope and what they could carry. Their homes, towns, lives, careers and dreams have been destroyed. Whole cities in Syria have been obliterated; these people have nothing to go back to. They are no different from you or I, they are Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Bus Drivers, Cleaners, from all walks of life. They just happened to be born in a different country at the wrong time.
