Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
Darwen Tower needs your help!
As we're sure you've recently heard, Darwen Tower was closed because it's upper level has been declared unsafe. BWDBC have put temporary measures in place and the tower has been re-opened. An independent survey has been conducted on the Tower and it seems there is a lot more work to be done to ensure that our Darwen Tower is safe and secure for future generations to enjoy.
It's estimated that the costs could get as high as £100,000 and are working with the borough council to get actual costs together ASAP.
We have had a HUGE amount of requests for a just giving page to be created so that Darreners can make a donation towards the cost of repairs.
Here's what Darwen Rotary Club are doing to ensure that the Tower is open and in great condition again as soon as possible.
We have completed our LEGO Darwen Tower and have collection tubs next to it that are welcoming donations.
On Sunday the 6th August 2018 we helped to organise the BIG Tower Walk which raised £573.18 for the tower repairs.
We will be at various events welcoming donations.
We have a masquerade ball on the 1st December 2018 and a Christmas Carol Concert on the 22nd December that will raise funds for the repairs.
We are also investigating Heritage Lottery funding and speaking with other charities who may be able to help.
Here is a summary of the report:
The building's condition is fair but a high standard of planned maintenance and repair are essential to conserve this important building in its remote and aggressive environment
As Darwen Tower is a Grade II listed building, all repairs (like repointing) will have to be done by qualified contractors. There have been no significant repairs to the Tower over the last few years and our aim is to get this renovation done properly so we can pass this precious Icon of our hometown onto the next generations in better condition than we found it!
Darwen Tower Overview
Darwen Tower is owned by the people of Darwen and managed on their behalf by the Borough council. The Tower is listed Grade II and is significant not only as a landscape feature, but for its connections with the 'right to roam', commemorating the events of 1896 when access rights over the moors above the industrialised Lancashire towns were claimed for the Townspeople.
The Tower also commemorates Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 and this significance is celebrated in the tower's official name 'Darwen Jubilee Tower'
