Story

Weihan Ding was a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Exeter Business School. He passed away in a hospital in China on January 20, 2023, aged 31.

Weihan was diagnosed with Acute Leukaemia (AML) on July 13, 2022 after having travelled from the UK to China. He received 4 months of chemotherapy treatment in a private hospital. The chemotherapy drugs broke down his immune system and he was left tired and weakened. He received a stem cell transplant in December 2022. During all this time he never lost his optimism even though he had to face all this alone in quarantine. Unfortunately, his organs rejected the transplant and he suffered a severe lung infection.

Weihan’s death shocked his family and our department. He had always been a dedicated teacher, a brilliant son, a perfect husband and a responsible father. He was the only child of his parents. Weihan is survived by his parents, his wife, Leyi Xu, and their 4-year-old son Alfie.

Since Weihan was employed in the UK, he did not have any insurance to cover the medical expenses in China. His medical treatment cost his family over two million Chinese yuan, or 237,600 pound sterling. We would like to help his family a little bit to get out of the debt Weihan's medical treatment has brought on to them. Please help if you can.

Also, if you like to share memories of Weihan, you can do this on the condolence wall.
