    Story

    Hi

My name is Archie and I was born 23 January 2018 (a whole 7 weeks early) weighing just 1.3kg/2.8lbs. I am known as a tiny baby and have spent most of my life so far in Intensive Care at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.

So that’s enough about me for the moment, let me tell you about my amazing mummy and daddy. My parents are both UK born, British Citizens who have lived in the UK for most of their lives however approximately 10 years ago, my daddy (Paul) moved to Lusaka, Zambia to start a safari business.

My mummy and daddy met and fell in love when mum travelled to Zambia for work, and the rest is history! Mummy moved to Zambia to live with daddy about 4 years ago, got engaged and then I came along.

Each year my parents would travel back to the UK to spend Christmas with our family and friends. Therefore they set off, me in mummy's tummy with a 'fit to fly note' from the Doctor in December 2017. Unfortunately they were unable to take out insurance cover in relation to the pregnancy as mummy was already pregnant with me. I wasn’t due to arrive until 13th March 2018 and therefore they had booked their flights, ready to fly back to Lusaka on 5 February 2018.

As you know, I happened to arrive a little early on 23 January 2018 (7 weeks - although I was only measuring as the size of a 28 week old baby) and gave everyone a big surprise! I wasn’t moving much in mummy's tummy and the doctors decided to deliver me via emergency C-Section. Once I was born I was moved to the ICU at RD&E.

It was a few days later when my parents spoke to the doctors and hospital staff and it became apparent that I would be staying at the hospital for a number of weeks, maybe even months! I still have lots of growing to do. Mummy and daddy were then informed that as they do not currently live in the UK (although they are British Citizens and have paid tax and NI for their working lives whilst they lived in the UK) that they would be responsible for all of the NHS fees including the delivery and would be charged by the day to keep me in the ICU. On top of this, the NHS Regulations meant that as my parents do not live in an EU/ EEA county, they would be charged and extra 150% of the NHS national tariff for any care they receive. As you can imagine, I have cost my mummy and daddy a lot of money as I was too impatient to wait until we touched down in Zambia but I am happy that I am being looked after and grateful to all of the NHS staff who are doing an amazing job with me.

Me and my mummy are still in hospital and although I have now been moved to low dependency and I have managed to put on some weight, I am still very small (1.9kg/4.1lbs) and unable to feed so it looks like I will be here for a little longer (costing my parents more and each day passes), therefore I wanted to ask for a little help for my mum and dad. They have already received a bill in excess of £40,000.00 (as at 22 February 2018. Fees are still being incurred daily and they do not have the funds to pay the amounts due. We really would appreciate any help.

    UPDATE

Hi everyone. Sorry I haven’t been able to update you for a little while, a lot has been going on. So me and mum have now left hospital and as each day passes I am getting stronger and bigger. I now weigh 3.2 kilos and the open duct near to my heart has finally closed over so I don’t have to have an operation. Both my mum and dad have been so strong and have looked after me so well, as have all of the very kind doctors and nurses. We are hoping to fly back home to Zambia at the end of the month.

Before we fly home my dad and two of his friends are doing a walk to raise money to help pay for the NHS bill. So they start the walk on the early hours of Saturday 21 April. They are planning to walk 30 miles across dartmoor in one day.

Mummy and daddy have now received the bill and our final target is £45,000.

Whilst we have already raised a massive amount of money, which we are all very grateful for, we’ve still got a long way to go. Please donate to sponsor daddy and his friends - any donations are much appreciated.

    Thank you again.

    Much love and cuddles

    Archie x

Paul, We were so sad to hear of Archie's early struggles but so pleased that Archie is now doing well. To have to go through this whilst starting life as a new family is terrible. Lots of love
