Weʼve raised £9,000 to Help Alan, who suffered a double legs amputation after an accident in France, Dunkirk.

    Lille, France
Funded on Friday, 31st August 2018

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

    Story

    Hello,

On the 14th of January, 2018 Alan, a refugee volunteer chef, was hit by a train near Dunkirk during an attempt to cross the border, seeking asylum. As a result of this accident, Alan lost both of his legs. He is a refugee from Iraqi Kurdistan. While there is little hope for state support, Alan’s family, friends and those whose hearts were touched by this tragic accident set up this fundraising page to aid Alan’s recovery, including leg prosthetics.

Alan is well known among Dunkirk refugee community workers and volunteers for his kindness and support. For over a year he cooked delicious meals for refugees that kept many alive and warm through the cold months. That is two, three times a day for 2500 people, every day. No matter how dreadful some days were, amid police raids, poor living conditions and little hope for improvement, Alan always stayed positive and comforted others in the camp.

Being a refugee is traumatic enough, but the status is not permanent. The limitation of having no legs is something Alan will have to live with for the rest of his life. We hope his scars will not be a reminder of how Europe failed him, forcing Alan into the life of immobility, but for the kindness of the people who came forth to support him and, let’s hope, give him strength to look for the future.

Alan is out of intensive care for now but is awaiting yet another operation and, we are told, there will be months until he can leave the hospital. We thank the medical staff at hospital in Lille for taking such a good care of him.

This fundraising page is set up with the approval of Alan’s family, and all funds will be forwarded to Alan’s family as his main trustee.

    Sincerely yours,

    “Team Allan”

Abid Pervez, UK, refugee camp volunteer,

Adèle Bras, France, refugee camp volunteer

Agnès Druel , France, refugee camp volunteer

Dlan Longman, Ireland, refugee camp volunteer

Sylvie Vicente, France, refugee camp volunteer

    Tanya Vacarda, UK, volunteer

And sixteen more souls from different parts of Europe.

PS. Our priority is legs prosthetics and we are looking at different options cost-wise, however we are also trying to sort out legal, admin and translation support for Alan. If you wish to help in any way other than your kind donation, feel free to get in touch with us. Thank you!

Hi All, I have just had the news that Alan’s recovery is not going smoothly as he is scheduled for another operation in the next month. He will have to go through the therapy after the operation again before he is ready to get the prosthetics for his legs. Meanwhile, we are trying to find out how much the French NHS will cover for the prosthetics so that we know the difference we need to cover. I wish I could hear some good news with you but that’s about it for now. Have a good day everyone! Tanya on behalf of team Alan

All, My apologise for the radio silence. it's getting very difficult to stay in touch with Alan due to his immediate surroundings. Since none of our volunteers is part of his family our access to the medical information is now greatly restricted. He is still going through the therapy and we are waiting for the news of him being ready for prosthetics so that we can make a donation. Have a good evening! Tanya on behalf of Team Alan

Good morning! Our fundraising for Alan finished on the 1st of September. Big thank you to all for your support and contribution! We have raised a total of £9000 Woohoo!! With all the fees taken, it gives us £8419.50 to put towards Alan’s recovery. We'll get in touch with Alan’s social worker at the end of this week to get the details on how close Alan is to getting his prosthetics from NHS, will be the basic ones, so that we can contribute towards it and see what other costs/needs need be covered. Have a great day !
