Wildfires sweeping through the Greek resort town of Mati near Athens killed at least 92 people. The death toll is likely to rise, as a large number of people are missing and the emergency services personnel have been overwhelmed by the size of the task. Last updated on Tuesday 31/07/18.
Among the victims were families with children found clasped in a last embrace as they tried to flee the flames.
Of the at least 190 people injured, many were in intensive care, and more than 23 were children.
The Greek people need help from the international community, as Greece is crippled by financial austerity measures as well as serious economic problems.
The inferno was Greece’s worst since August 2007. A state of national emergency has been declared, and the Greek Prime Minister has ordered three days of national mourning.
The impact on surviving families is immense. Thousands of people are left on the streets with nothing to their name! Emergency shelter, food, water, medicines and clothing are desperately needed, as the Greek authorities are struggling to cope due to the high number of victims.
