Story

Paul had a catastrophic brain injury in 2005 after his drink was spiked in Thailand. This resulted in firstly Paul being in a coma for three months and developing long term balance problems and severe restrictions to his mobility. He has had years of rehabilitation in institutions and gruelling physiotherapy but throughout all of that time he has shown remarkable determination and resilience to try to get as much physical movement as he can and to try to have some kind of a life.

Although he can walk a few steps with a walking frame indoors, he relies upon a wheelchair a great deal to get about. However, Paul has been unable to get out of his home independently as his manual wheelchair makes it impossible for him to manage pavements and kerbs. He has therefore not been out of the house by himself for 13 years and relies heavily upon other people to support him. This situation is really hard for him and has a negative effect on his self-esteem and confidence.

It is possible to purchase a motorised attachment for his wheelchair which would give him the opportunity to hand cycle for exercise and to use the motor when he becomes fatigued, which is a side effect of his brain injury. It would also enable him to manage kerbs and uneven pavements.

Paul has overcome massive difficulties and continues to face challenges on a daily basis. It would be wonderful to give him a mode of transport which would allow him to have greater independence and a more ‘normal’ life.
