Story
We met Jean on the street just inside the doorway of a tube station. She was trying to sleep. She had her sleeping bag over her head. I nudged her arm and she was so happy to see a friendly face. I asked her if she wanted a hot drink and some food.
She declined the food, she just said she's so cold, but people give her food all the time.
Jean lost her disabled son to a mistake the hospital made. A nurse had made a comment that "at least you won't be as much of a burden on the system now he's gone". That comment took her over the edge and she spiraled into a depression.
She lost her home and was evicted by the council.
No family and nowhere to go she ended up on the street.
8 years later she's still on the street. Charities like Outreach guide her to a free shelter, but all she gets there is drunk/drugged up people abusing her physically, that being on the street for her is the safer option, (despite the fact that she shows me the scars of when some lads on a night out kicked her for laughs so badly that it split her head open)...
SO WHY do we need your help?
Jean isn't a drunk, she's never used drugs, has no mental illness and isn't on the street by choice.
She isn't seeking asylum, doesn't have a child (anymore!), isn't mentally unstable.. so therefore she is last priority for the opportunity to be housed.
ALL she wanted from us was the opportunity to be in a shelter. To spend the night in relative safety, warmth, have a bath and be able to sleep.
When I gave her £35 for some phone credit (so I could follow up with her) and £25 for the shelter for 3 days.. she cried tears of appreciation!
We setup Helping Homeless to not only help people in the short term, but to provide re-education, support and coaching, so that she can know what else is possible and build a better life for herself.
Any donation you can make will allow us to house her, educate her, get her a job and help her get off the street for good. Blessings.
