On Friday 11th April 2025, beautiful 2-year-old German Shepherd x Malinois, Ruby, was in a tragic accident that has left her fighting for her life. Her harness unexpectedly snapped while we were out, which caused her to run off and before we could reach her, she was struck by a car at speed and became trapped underneath it.

The driver was unaware she was caught under the vehicle after the hit, as they gradually brought the vehicle to a stop. During this terrifying ordeal, Ruby’s legs were caught up in the wheel arch, and she sustained severe burns to her front right shoulder and back due to the intense friction from being dragged under the moving car for roughly 90ft. Most heartbreaking of all, she has sustained a severe injury to her back left leg which needs operating on and she currently has no sensation in her front right lower leg and paw, meaning she may never regain the use of her leg. Despite the pain and trauma she’s endured, Ruby is fighting with incredible strength and is showing such willingness to fight through her traumatic injuries.

This happened on a bridge just outside our village in Lincolnshire—a road that should be 30mph, but dangerously, is signed as a 60mph zone.

Ruby has suffered severe injuries. She needs urgent surgery on her back left leg, and heartbreakingly, if she does not regain movement in her front leg, she may need to have it amputated. Alongside surgery, she will need long-term pain relief and rehabilitation, especially if she needs to be able to adjust to and live a happy life on three legs.

Despite everything she’s going through, Ruby remains the sweetest, most loving dog you could ever meet. She’s incredibly cuddly, gentle, and full of personality. We rescued her as a puppy and she quickly became the heart of our home—our best friend, our shadow, our everything.

Ruby has not stopped fighting throughout the short time she has been in the veterinary centre and we believe she has a lot of fight left in her, but we are desperstely seeking help to fund her medical expenses.

All of the staff at Aldervale Vets - Ashby-by-Partney, have done an incredible job so far in saving Rubys life and keeping her as happy and comfortable as she can be during this extremely hard time and deserve recognition for their admirable efforts.

We are devastated and doing everything we can, but the veterinary costs are beyond what we can afford on our own. We are reaching out with broken hearts to ask for help from anyone who can spare anything at all.

Every donation—no matter how small—will go directly toward Ruby’s surgery, medications, and ongoing care. If you’re not able to donate, please share Ruby’s story.

Her best friend King, another German Shepherd x Malinois we rescued, can’t understand why she hasn’t yet come home since her walk and we hope to be able to bring her home and reunite them.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for reading, sharing, and helping Ruby get her second chance.

With gratitude,

Mark, Sally, Ryann, Kennedy, King and most importantly, Ruby!
