Story

On Sunday 17th November I will be running a 10k dressed as 'Daddy Bear' in aid of our son Henry Bear Wright, born asleep on Saturday 19th October at 21:50. We proudly always used to call our baby ‘Baby Bear’ which is where the middle name of Bear has come from.

Whilst we are both absolutely devastated and heartbroken, we do not want people’s sympathies and condolences, as we are bursting with pride that we are now parents to little Henry and we will now always be a mummy and daddy. Most importantly we want to celebrate Henry’s life.

Wednesday 16th October, when we found out our little mans heart was no longer beating, was the most painful moment in our life. Even more crueler, was that because our little man was 23 weeks old, Alice would have to deliver our baby.

Thursday and Friday we had to somehow get to grips with our loss, whilst coming to terms with the fact that we would need to deliver Henry, but the support we had was incredible. We had so much support from our families and the staff at the James Paget who really were amazing with us. Following this time we decided that we wanted to celebrate the life of our baby rather than mourn his loss.

Alice’s labour was induced early on Saturday 19th October and our baby was delivered later that evening and we couldn’t be happier to discover that Alice had given birth to our beautiful baby boy Henry Bear Wright, who was absolutely perfect. I am so proud of Alice for delivering our little boy as I don’t know how she has managed to find the strength.

On Friday we came up with a list of things we wanted to do with our little boy and we did all of those things on Sunday, which was absolutely perfect. We had a teddy bear picnic, a blessing and naming ceremony with all of our families present and finished the day with bed time stories. These memories mean the world to us, and will be cherished forever.

A few days after we returned home we decided to contact a local facebook group for parents who have gone through similar heartbreaks. The support we received when we messaged the group was so heartwarming and has really helped us. Losing a child is a grief like no other, and to be surrounded by others who have been through the same experience enables you to feel that your not alone, that someone understands.

A crucial factor of enjoying our time with Henry was the space and facilities within the delivery suite at the James Paget Hospital. The Rosemary Suite is a special bereavement suite on the side of the central delivery ward, it is a suite we sincerely hope and prey that you will never visit.

This heart breaking experience has made us appreciate how good people can be. The limited time we had with our son was made more precious by the kind generosity of others, donating their time, energy, money, love and thoughts to this cause. Incredibly, many facilities in the suite were fundraised by others in our position.

We intend to use the money we raise, whether its more or whether its less, to get further items for the Rosemary Suite. An idea we have is creating a 'making memories box', as the memories we made with Henry are so precious to us. In addition, we would like to support charities designed to aid the recovery of bereaved parents, as we know how traumatic this experience has been for us.

Thank you for reading about Henry and making donations if you can. By giving you some insight, we hope we can share his memory with you in the weeks, months and years to come.
