Story

In the summer of 2018 I hope to go to Tanzania’s Iringa region for 10 days. Whilst there I will work with our sister school, Mwanakianga Secondary School. There I will serve as a teaching assistant, learn from the teachers and students and do my best to be as much help to them as I can.

In Iringa I will also visit Neema Crafts (www.neemacrafts.com), a centre that provides jobs for people with disabilities. In Tanzania there is still stigma surrounding disabilities, so people with a disability have difficulties getting employment and often feel alienated from their community and even their families. Neema Crafts challenges that stigma and provides people with disabilities with jobs making craft and art products for sale.

A key issue in rural Tanzania is access to drinking water. The average distance women have to walk to get water is 12km overall so in August 2017 I will walk a minimum of 50km over three days. That's equivalent to over 4 trips to collect fresh water. I would be grateful if you could sponsor me for this walk, either per kilometre or with a lump sum.

To raise money so far I have been regularly working for the Shoreham Crown Pub, both morning shifts and working in the kitchen in the evening, and regular gardening for a neighbour. I also busk with my guitar in Sevenoaks and at local events. So far I have raised £900 but I need to raise £2200 so would be grateful for sponsorship and donations.

Thank you, Herbie.
