Story

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." Nelson Mandela

Almost two years ago, I paddled on a board from Big Bay to Robben Island (and back) primarily to keep my friend, Sophia, company ☺️. In doing so, I also had the privilege of raising money for Blood Cancer UK (formerly Bloodwise). It was an incredible experience and one which has inspired me, this year, to make that crossing again - but this time SWIMMING, and only one way: from Robben Island to Big Bay.

But I’m a little more fearful this time… mostly because it’s a very long way to swim (almost 8km), the water tends to be very cold ...and I’ll be IN the water this time, not standing above it. But this is an important distinction for me as it's not only a bigger personal challenge - my way of trying to put into action ‘facing my fears’ - but also a very real and symbolic way to help support those whom I know need help to face theirs. In a very concrete way.

Why this particular challenge? I’m going to attempt this ’freedom swim’ in the hope I can also raise funds necessary for a counselling service for young women in Her Voice , a charity for whom I have been volunteering for the past couple of years. During the last year, COVID-19 has affected every one of us - especially charities, and those they serve. Her Voice works with young mothers, aged between 18 and 35, women often come from backgrounds with little or no support. This year I’ve been mentoring three ladies whom are leaders of a 'Her Voice' small group and, the better I've gotten to know them, the more I'm inspired by their courage in taking care not only of their children but also their fellow mums - while working, studying or simply trying to survive job loss and endless months of unemployment. Her Voice aims to lend them support in every area where they need it – emotional, spiritual and practical - and, this past year, we have together highlighted the need for counselling services for many women battling in seriously tough situations.

By completing this 'freedom swim', I hope both to raise awareness of mental health issues and also to raise funds for this much needed service. Whilst my challenge is only momentary, hopefully your support will be long lasting - and will go some way towards helping both heal and empower these women: fighters, survivors and role models in their own communities.
