    Story

Update 9am (GMT) 16.02.2023 : Thank you all so much for your generous donations so far. As you may know, boats are very expensive (£30,000) and while we have exceeded our original target of £5,000 for the ergathon we still have a long way to go to cover the full cost of the Boat. We are now aiming to raise £10,000 from our ergathon. (Eleanor - HHBC President)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HHBC is the biggest society at Hughes Hall, and every year we welcome dozens of new rowers and coxes to the club. Our members range from complete beginners to those with many years of experience, all rowing together as part of a friendly and welcoming club. In the past few years Hughes Hall Boat Club has grown, both in size and successes. 2018 marked the first year that HHBC had its own independent women’s squad, having previously operated as a joint squad with Lucy Cavendish College. In 2019 the women’s side entered two boats into the Lent Bumps for the first time, where W1 won blades (the most coveted prize!). In 2022, the women’s side entered two boats to the May Bumps for the first time. The men’s side of the club has also had great victories in the Bumps races in the previous few years, winning blades in May 2019, Lent 2020 and May 2022.

However, this amazing expansion means we need new equipment in order to allow as many rowers as possible to train and race. We are therefore raising money to help pay for a much-needed new women’s VIII boat. To do so, HHBC will be running a 24-hour ergathon from 6pm on the 15th of February, to 6pm on the 16th of February 2023. What is an ergathon you ask? Members of the club will be collectively rowing on an erg (rowing machine) non-stop for a full 24 hours, and will also be joined by a few special guests!

The ergathon aims to raise £5000 towards the total cost of the new women’s boat, so please consider sponsoring our efforts. All donations, however small, will help us reach our goal! The event will be held within Hughes Hall and regular updates will be posted on HHBC social media pages, so you can keep up to date wherever you are.
