    Story

    What is The Hobbs Challenge?

In memory of the late Christian Hobbs, who tragically passed away on boxing day 2017, we present The Hobbs Challenge. The Hobbs Challenge is a project organised by Staff and Students to raise money for The Christian Hobbs Memorial Gym at The Heart of England Community Boxing Club. We hope to raise £25,000 for the club by undertaking sporting, cultural or academic challenges. These challenges are listed below. It is our hope that hundreds of challenges are undertaken for the cause. To find out more, please watch the video below.

With more challenges to come, including Andy Chessell undertaking the Venice Marathon this Sunday, we hope to make it to at least £10,000 by the end of 2018. C23 – Leamington ½ Marathon – Martin Denness – 01.07.18 What a day to run my first half marathon, middle of a heatwave, start delayed by 45 mins and finishing shortly before midday in temperature of 26c! After feeling comfortable up to 14km, I really started to struggle at 16-17km. Fortunately the last 4km was largely flat or slightly downhill and although the last 2km was tough I knew I had to complete it for those supporting the Hobbs Challenge through me. I finished with a time of 1:50:18 and in the top 25% which I was really pleased with.

Challenge 11 - St Begas Ultra Trail Race - Richard Horner - 27.05.18 - Challenge Report - Running for 37 miles between Bassenthwaite & St Bees in Cumbria, with 2000m total ascent. I finished 67/132, so one place below the top half which is my usual aim in these events. Foolishly I wore a new pair of trail shoes, insufficiently broken-in, and suffered from the half way point with really painful and disgusting blisters. But it was a great day out, and thoughts of Christian and the Hobbs Challenge kept me going through the pain.
