I have been working at the City of Bristol College for the last six months teaching English and numeracy skills to teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19. The teenagers are mostly economically disadvantaged immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers from countries such as Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Eritrea and Iraq among others. Among my own students there are a number of teenagers that have come to the UK on their own having lost their families due to turmoil in their own countries. I have personally seen these children suffering from trauma, depression and the anxieties that ensue from finding yourself alone in a foreign environment without the ability to communicate and lacking a support network. Some of these students have not even had the opportunity to go to school in their own countries and have come to my class lacking literacy skills in their own languages. Having reached the UK their struggles are far from over and many are still awaiting answers for their asylum claims. I believe educational enrichment and creating a sense of community among the students is an integral part of their education and sense of well-being. To this end, I hope to raise money for enrichment activities and after school clubs for our students. Together with your help we can take steps towards bridging the gap between their world and ours.
